An Open Letter to the Attorney-General of Ontario, the Honourable Chris Bentley

Dear Minister;

I am writing today, about a family which I am ashamed to say that this country has destroyed, for lack of better term: Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Montague, their Sons Steven, Michael, and Daughter Katie.

My family and I first met Bruce and his family back in 2000 and we visited with them very regularly for several years. Bruce's daughter Katie was our babysitter for 2 years when our first child was born. In my opinion I have never met a more upstanding family both parents and children anywhere in my entire life.

Our legal system has made a mockery out of his case from day one. They made Bruce out to be a monster in the media, charged him with some 50+ charges and pasted it all over the media. Subsequently, these charges, many of which were dropped, have never been recounted to the public in the media. To this day there are still people that believe he is still being charged on the trumped up charges that were first announced in the local media, which was done to decrease support for him.

This being said, his criminal case is one thing. However, to proceed with confiscation of this man’s home under the pretence that it was obtained from illegal proceeds is the grossest of all injustices in Canadian history.

He was a man that did not believe in a new law that was tabled and passed forcing "CRIMINALS" to register their guns....hahahaha. Well they sure poured out of the wood work to run in and get themselves on record DIDn’t they. He said to me "I will not register my own guns out of principal as I do not believe in this mandatory registration against my constitutional rights to bear arms." Therefore he would not run his business as a gun smith, because he was told he would have to report anyone that brought an unregistered gun into his shop. He said "WHAT TYPE OF A HYPOCRITE WOULD I BE IF I TURNED IN SOMEONE FOR UNREGISTERED GUNS AND MY OWN ARE NOT REGISTERED." This is the type of man you have in a MAXIMUM security prison, a man that could not lie about his customers so he shut down his business and lost his livelihood instead.

This man the entire time that I have known him, was the one and only man that I know who volunteered his time year after year with a youth Drama group designing/building/and operating stage props for months on end. He never missed Sunday Worshipu, for any reason that I know. His family (wife, sons and daughter) built their family home from the ground up sacrificing more than every family in Dryden together to have their dream come through of building and owning their own Log home.

Now you want to tear away the one thread that these great human beings have holding them together, in a meaningless vindictive battle that you hope will break their very soul so they will not come back to fight this case in court. You have already done this, by turning down his last appeal.

You know this home was not attained by the proceeds of illegal business being done there, I believe the damage is done. You have the man serving his time in prison leave the final bit of hope his family has left in this country, LET THEM KEEP THEIR HOME AND BELONGINGS
